What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is one of the leading cancers in both men and women, often linked to smoking, air pollution, and environmental factors. Non-smokers are also at risk due to secondhand smoke and pollution exposure.

Common Symptoms
  • Persistent coughing, sometimes with blood.
  • Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing.
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing.
  • Unexplained weight loss or fatigue.
Diagnosis

Chest X-rays, CT scans, and biopsy of lung tissue confirm the diagnosis. Early detection is rare but crucial for better treatment outcomes.

Treatment

Surgery: Removal of the tumor and surrounding tissues.

Chemotherapy: Often used after surgery to kill remaining cancer cells.

Targeted Therapy: Uses drugs that specifically attack cancer cells with less harm to normal cells.

Radiation Therapy: Used to target cancer in patients unable to undergo surgery, or in conjunction with surgery to reduce tumor size or prevent recurrence.

Role of Radiation Therapy

A key treatment in head and neck cancers, helping to preserve essential functions like speech and swallowing by targeting the tumor directly while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissue.
